Stella

lst-transportation-barge

In winter 2025–2026, Finferries’ M/S Stella will make a major move toward sustainable maritime transport with the installation of a peak-shaving battery system. Originally built at the STX Finland Rauma shipyard in 2012, where some of today’s LST electricians contributed, Stella is now being upgraded by LST Projects Oy as the main contractor. Fourteen years after launch, the vessel’s conversion is well underway, with design and procurement progressing smoothly.

Stella’s conversion is part of the EU-funded REISFER project under the Interreg Central Baltic 2021–2027 program, aiming to reduce CO₂ emissions on the Korppoo–Houtskari route by up to 50%. Installation work will begin at the end of the year, with the upgraded vessel scheduled to enter service in early 2026.

Stella conversion consisted of:
Battery room
Rest rooms for crew
Sauna
Automation system renewal
Dismantling of engines
Conversion Engineering (Naval architecture, mechanical and electrical engineering)
Procurement
Steel works
Electrical works
Commissioning
